Lent Post: The Holy (Week) Roller (Coaster)

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
It is that time of the (liturgical) year. Holy Week. It is that week when we condense and compress almost all of human experience and emotion into one week. There is Palm Sunday triumph, Thursday fright and anxiety, a Friday that is anything but good, and the unbelievable ecstasy that we experience on Easter Sunday.   It is a roller coaster of emotions, and of what it means to walk along side our Lord as he experiences all of what it means to be fully human. And we are just along for the ride. There is no stopping the story. There...

Lent Blog Post #7: Get Excited

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
It's not often that anyone gets to say this, so I'm going to shout it from the blog post-able Mountain Tops!   OUR SESSION MEETING WAS EXCITING!!!   There, I said it. Yes, it is possible for a session meeting to be fun! Now, I should say that our session meetings are already pretty well run (thanks, Nora!), and that we have always had meaningful and spirit-led conversation. (Disclaimer: I've been to 3 session meetings so far :-)). But this particular session meeting was more than the usual.   As our session, and our congregation, discusses and figures out how we...

Lent Blog Post #6: An Update

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
It's been a little while since my last post. But that's not because I've been lazy! Actually, it has been so crazy since I last blogged, I don't really know where to start. But I'll give it a shot:   Friday afternoon, I sent the Jr. & Sr. Highs off to Conclaves 2015 at Camp Cho-Yeh. It was freezing cold, but everyone made it there just fine.   Saturday was a bit crazier. Saturday morning, I went in front of the Examinations Board of the Presbytery of New Covenant. This was one of my final steps in the ordination process, and...

Lent Blog Post #5: Slowing Down

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog

Yesterday afternoon on my drive home, I was going through the normal routine: driving through traffic on Beltway 8 and listening to a Podcast. The one I decided to listen to yesterday was part of the "Robcast", it's done by Rob Bell, (Author of Love Wins, Velvet Elvis, and now of Opera fame). The particular one I was listening to yesterday was called "Atoms & Interiors". You can find it here: http://robbell.podbean.com/    Among other things, it talked about mind-blowing facts in quantum physics, the universe, and all that jazz; about how many atoms and subatomic particles are in our bodies...and how...

Lent Blog Post #4: Genetics & Ecclesiastes

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
IMG_1914.JPG
As many of you know (or will know shortly...), my wife is a Genetic Counselor. Among other things, that means I am partial to a lot of science/genetics conversations that almost sound like they're in another language. It's usually a lot of really big words talking about a lot of extremely tiny things: pieces of DNA, metabolic systems, coding changes, and lots of other fancy words that I could throw out but not really know what they mean.    Tonight, though, something brought our two semantic worlds together. Tonight, Allison was working on learning about a genetic variant in a patient...

Lent Blog Series #3: Being w/ God

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Just a short reflection on Nora's Sermon Yesterday:    As I was sitting there listening to the sermon yesterday (as an aside: it's great to be able to listen to a sermon as a pastor, in addition to preaching them), I was struck by two things:    1)  The idea of the Spirit descending on Jesus, and then immediately sending him into the wilderness What must that have been like, being forced by an unseen power out into a formidable vastness? Can we even imagine what that must have felt like? I imagine I would have been terrified, but hopefully someway...

Lenten Blog Post #2: Wilderness

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
TenantCreek1.jpg
The lectionary gospel passage for this week talks about two things: Jesus' baptism and his sudden departure to the wilderness. One of the things we talk about a lot during Lent, and rightfully so, is how this season of 40 days is our wilderness experience. If we are required to have at least one for the year, then it might as well be this one!     In the Bible, the wilderness tends to be this big scary thing. And again, it gets that pretty honestly. The wilderness is no doubt the desert that stretches from the Jordan river almost...

Lent Blog Series #1: Ash Wednesday

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Today marks the beginning of the Lenten season. It is a time where we place ashes on our foreheads for all to see (at the same time when we read scriptures that tells us not to showcase our piety in public...ironic, huh?), and so that we ourselves can be reminded that we are broken, living in a broken world.    Tonight, in our Ash Wednesday service, I am reading Psalm 51. It's the psalm that David supposedly wrote after Nathan opened his eyes to his own hypocrisy and sinful ways. Ellen Davis, a professor at Duke Divinity School, calls this psalm...

Post-First-Sermon Monday

Posted by on in Pastor's Blog
Wow...   What a ride yesterday was! There were several points where I felt like I was just hanging on for dear life and trying to make it through the day. Luckily, the wheels didn't fall off, and I think the Spirit was in the building!   After reflecting yesterday afternoon, and hearing from several people, there are a few things that I can say now:   -I probably spent a little too much time talking about BBQ. But really...is that even possible?!    -That was a really long quote, and thanks for sticking with me through it! It was all...

Do you have a job or a ministry?

"Do you have a job in this church, or do you have a ministry?"   Well, the reality is, there is a difference. Perhaps this will help: If you are doing it because no one else will, it's a job. If you're doing it to serve the Lord, it's a ministry. If you're doing it just well enough to get by, it's a job. If you're doing it to the best of your ability, it's a ministry. If you'll do it only so long as it doesn't interfere with other activities, it's a job. If you're committed to staying with it...
